If backing out does not work, you may try putting a rug or a carpet over the board to give the tires something to grip to. Do not stand too close because when you try backing out, the tire may shoot the board out, and if the board gets shot out, it could get dangerous. As long as nobody is standing close, there should not be a problem. Trying the board has never worked for me, but I do know people for whom this has worked, so it is worth a try. If this does not work, then you are going to have to try to tow your car out of the ditch. Next, you have to hook up the car with a tow strap. Different types of tow straps can be used: rope, nylon, metal chain, winch cable, nylon tow strap with hooks, and nylon tow strap with loop ends. I prefer to use the nylon tow strap with loop ends because it has always worked for me. You can attach the tow strap to several places. If you are attaching it to a car, the best place would be underneath the car. Most cars have a metal bar right behind the bumper. You have to make sure the bar is not attached to the gas tank in any way because that could be dangerous. If the stuck vehicle is a truck, you can attach it to the bumper if it is sturdy and the bumper is welded on to the truck, or underneath it to the metal bar by the bumper. I will explain how to use the nylon tow strap with the loop ends because this is the tow strap with witch I am most familiar. You loop the tow strap around the metal bar and then pull it through the loop. Now you have to pull the tow strap tight so it is secure. At this point you have to connect the other end of the tow strap to the car that is going to be pulling out the stuck car. Most people use a truck to pull out the stuck car if they have one available to them. You have to tie the other end of the strap to the same metal bar that you attached it to on the other car. Do not attach the strap to the hitch ball on a truck. Hitch balls are not strong enough to tow a car out and if broken, they could fly through the window of the other car. Now pull the strap and make sure it is tight and that it will not come loose. Now that the cars are connected, you can actually tow out the car. Finally, you are ready to tow the car out of the ditch. Since the car is in a ditch, it is probably easiest to pull the car out on to the street.
