A Life Gone
...wn there, drinking and playing around. It was like a hang out for them like a tree house. Brian and Trent threw rocks along the tracks and talked about there plans for tomorrow and what they wanted to do next weekend. It was getting late; the stars were out shining so brightly that it gave a little bit of light to cast a shadow. They sat down beside the tracks and looked up at the stars. Before too long they were passed out asleep along the tracks. They were asleep for about two hours; it was around 4:00 am. It was time for the train to come; you could hear the faint sound of the train coming. The tracks began to shake, the whistling of the train getting closer, and the ringing of the bells for the electric arms to come down at the rail road crossing up ahead. The train was almost upon them. You could see the headlight of the train from a short distance. The conductor faintly saw two figures lying too close to the tracks. Trent’s right leg was amputated from the knee down; he lost several pints of blood. Brian had internal injuries, a broken leg, fractured hip and lacerations. His body was covered with gravel burns, but he had both his legs and arms. Brian and Trent were in the same hospital room throughout their recover, still inseparable. All the boys could do was laugh, aloud, at how ridiculous they were to fall asleep on that track. They laughed like it was a joke. Not a single person could understand why they weren’t taking the accident more serious. Brian was having a very difficult time recovering. He was full of guilt inside. He blamed himself for them being on the train tracks and for Trent loosing his leg. The guilt began to swallow him up until he became distant, he stopped going to school, going out with friends and he started to separate himself from Trent. Trent begged him to talk to him, talk about the accident, not to keep it locked inside of him. Trent never blamed him he tried several times to tell him that he was not a fault. They were both there together. On the six month anniversary of the day of the accident late in the night around 4:00 a.m., Brian went back to that same sp...
