The younger generation wanted to bring in other races into the society while the old generation tried to keep them out with things like the KKK and immigration laws. The two generations fought to bring what they thought was right to the United States. They tried to get black people accepted into society. These conflicts showed the clashes of modernism and traditionalism. Urban life was poor. The houses were small and the apartments were smaller. There was, however, a greater sense of community. The rural life, on the other hand, was as rich as rich can be. They lived in larger houses and had maids to do their biddings. In many cases the younger generation lived in the city. They wanted more freedom and wanted more rights. The rich didn't want to be over-thrown so they enacted censorship. They wanted to keep people from speaking their minds. Photos show the life in the city. The poorly dressed people and the starving children. Those same photos also showed happiness in the family and moral values. They showed that the people wanted to have fun. The rich and the poor were up in arms with each other. They both wanted totally different things. The poor wanted lower taxes and more space. The rich wanted to keep taxes high and keep the people crowded. The rich wanted to capitalize on the poor people's suffering. The wanted to be able to pay them low wages and make them pay lots of money for housing. The rich and the poor both clashed through out the era. Many times the rich were mad poor by there own means.
