The book is about two guys; Raoul Duke and his Samoan lawyer Dr. Gonzo who embark on a road trip to find the American dream. This book entails their crazy road trip to Las Vegas in a red convertible named the red shark. They had an arsenal of drugs in the trunk of their car including marijuana, mescaline, acid, cocaine, ether, alcohol, and all types of prescription medication. Their constant use of drugs have warped the minds of these two avid drug users, as they think they see hallucinations of bats, reptiles, moving floors, and all types of psychedelic images. The story is spilt up into two parts; The Mint 400 and the District Attorneys’ Conference. The book and the movie coincide with each other all the way up to the second part. That is when some parts of the book were not put into the movie. In the movie Raoul Duke is played by Johnny Depp and Dr. Gonzo is played by Benicio Del Toro. They both are supreme actors in this movie and fit the roles of Dr. Gonzo and Raoul Duke perfectly.
