I know that this is not the time when Delaney was considered an abstract artist (and he never really wanted to be associated with this movement), but at the very least some of his works during this time suggested “abstract art” to me. Actually this is the type of abstractness that I enjoy as apposed to his later works. There was a huge African-American Rights movement going on at the time Beauford Delaney was in New York. I’m sure that this had a huge impact on his paintings and thought process. He chose to live in Harlem which inspired him to paint the urban landscapes surrounding the area. His brush stroke is free flowing, and expressive. I feel that while painting Delaney felt completely free. Painting made him “famous” amongst his artistic peers, and provided a roof over his head.
