...r yard, or a jerk who cuts you off in the middle of five o’clock traffic it doesn’t matter because part of being an adult is learning to deal with it in a mature way. That is how going to college and learning to coexist with others prepare your for the real world. People go to college to become adults. A person technically an adult when they turn eighteen but that doesn’t make them an adult. It is kind of like saying that a person is an actor just because they have a short line in a local commercial. There is more to being an actor than just saying a line in a commercial and there is more to being an adult than just being eighteen. Adults have many common traits that makes them real adults which include being independent, responsible, and most importantly mature. Being independent is something you see in all real adults. College is part of the progression of becoming independent. As you grow up you start becoming more and more independent. At first, as a child you are completely reliant on your parents. As you age and become a teenager in most cases you earn an allowance or you have a job and are expected to start saving and paying for some of your wants and needs. Going to college is just the next and possibly the last step of this progression. In college you are usually away from home. In most cases you have a budget that you have to split between your wants and your needs. You also have to plan your time so that you are able to keep up in school, possibly work, and participate in whatever extracurricular activities you choose both educationally and socially. Still, most students get help from parents and others with paying for college. I know that since I have came to college if I am in deep I will call my parents and ask for help but I don’t do it with every little problem. As I grow older and time moves on, I believe I will stop calling my parents as much and start dealing with my problems on my own. This is part of the process of becoming a real adult. Another way a person becomes a real adult is by being responsible. Real adults are responsible for themselves by being responsible for their actions and decisions. In college the institution you attend expects you to be responsible for your own actions and decisions. If you decide to cheat and you get caught the institution is very tough on you because they expect you to be responsible and do your own work. This is different than high school where you usually just get slapped on the wrist when you get caught. Also, in college you don’t have teachers who nag you about your homework being due, you don’t have a set bed time, and you don’t have some one telling you not to spend your money on that new video game because you need that English book. This is because they expect you to be responsible about your work, bedtime, and money. That responsibility is something you see in all real adults. The most important trait of a real adult, I believe, is being mature. This is something that is not seen in all technical adults. The maturity I am talking about is really a combination of being independent, responsible and many other traits. Some examples of this is taking responsibility for not doing your homework, not studying for your math test, or choosing to go out and drink when you have classes the next day. As an adult you have the choice to do what you want but you also have the responsibility of your actions. Being mature is realizing this and basing your decisions upon your responsibilities. In college you have all kinds of opportunities to go out and have fun because of the independence you are given. Being mature is realizing when you can go out and have fun and when you have to stay in because the consequen...
