...ings raided remote and undefended monasteries. They took land and learned how to farm and trade. They intermingled with the people and established towns such as York, Dublin and Chester. Harbors were built and attacks against England and France were staged. These wars led to contributions of politics and economics for the Vikings. Moving further West we arrived in Iceland an Island that was discovered by the Vikings as there ship had been blown off course. It is questionable whether the Vikings were the first people to take up residence here. The Celtic people also claim to have discovered Iceland. Greenland which is located west of Iceland was the next stop on our voyage. Located in frigid arctic tundra it was questionable whether life could exist here. However, Erik the Red discovered two areas which could be inhabited and farmed. These areas were farmed used for about 300 years then mystically disappeared due to economic and social conditions. Folk tales are told that the Inuit and Norseman, who had once lived in harmony, began to fight against each other and killed each other thus causing the disappearance of this Island. Moving on we landed on Markland and Helluland , which were the first north American lands explored by the Vikings. Helluland was covered with glaciers and high topped mountains.
