Judith Bennett’s A Medieval Life brings the life of one medieval peasant, Cecilia Penifader in view for modern society. Through the life of Cecilia Bennett shows how other medieval peasants lived while showing the life of Cecilia as well. Bennett introduces the reader to all parts of medieval society for peasants from family structure, to community ties, up to the economy of the larger medieval state. By using court records, archaeological evidence, and other medieval books, Bennett is able to ring the life of Cecilia into view in not only an informational manner but interesting manner as well. Judith Bennett mainly uses medieval court documents in the writing of A Medieval Life. The large role courts played in medieval society made the book possible. Without the courts and the excellent record keeping of the courts it would be nearly impossible to find so much detail about the life of Cecilia. The court records also prove to be an advantage for Bennett for their accuracy. Court documents are original and do not change over time. Bennett also uses other books as sources to discover the life of Cecilia but these do not prove to be as accurate as the court documents. The books’ stories are sure to have changed over the years just as grandparents’ stories change each time they are told. The stories get exaggerated and changed each time they are repeated. The court documents give Bennett the true information to support the books and stories and are a big advantage to the writing of A Medieval Life.
