Lula picks on Clay being out of place, since he doesn’t acknowledge the fact that he is Black. His clothes don’t hide his history, his roots. Lula calls him a poser and not a man who acknowledges who he is. Lula insists that she knows who he actually is. She calls him a murderer because of his heritage. The heritage of the oppressed murdering the oppressor. In this play we see a typical power struggle in day to day life. Power is defined in both personal and interpersonal terms. In the first sense it refers to one’s physical, intellectual and moral capacity to act. In the second term it denotes the ability to influence the behavior of people around us. On an everyday basis we encounter situations where unless things go our way we are not quite satisfied. Power over another person is sometimes the fundamental basis of a relationship. It can be based on specialized skills a person has, or the ability to reward others. Knowledge is power, the possession of specific information which other people want or which can be potentially damaging to another person gives us power. Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world. Certain action’s increases one’s power while others take it away from us. It also requires for us to have control over one’s emotion. At this day and age, being successful in life depends a lot on how you have played the game, be it an MBA, an artist, or even a professor in a university. We need to have the right qualification, know the right people and even go so far as to grease a few palms.
