Although it seems ironic due to her terrible situation, she observed the outside world in a quite beauteous way. Chopin writes, “She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air…” (574) Chopin describes nature as possessing new life. This is ironic because someone in the story had just died. The reader would be expecting a mood of darkness and anguish. After shortly sulking through her grief, Mrs. Mallard was overcome with a great sense of joy that she was now free. The window symbolizes the life that she has ahead of her. As she gazed out the window, she realized that now that her husband is dead, she only has to live for herself.
