Some said that the invention of the cotton gin was the worst thing that could have happened to slavery. These people thought that if the cotton gin wasn’t invented then slavery would have just diminished on its own because of how long it took to manually separate the seeds from the cotton. Slavery was the main issue that separated the North from the South. Many of the Northerners just didn’t grasp the true need for slavery. They did not understand its necessity to these Southern plantation owners. Likewise, the Southerners did not like the Northerners always on their case about it. The Southerners felt that to make money they had to grow crops and the slaves did that job. I wonder how the Northerners would have felt if the Southerners were trying to do away with their industrial way of life? The South felt that it was getting worse and worse for them as time went on and more states entered the Union. The halt in the spread of slavery angered the Southerners.
