...ympathetic people who feel pity for Rubin and they realise that he was never given a fair trial so they decide to help him. Rubin Hurricane Carter was unfairly and wrongly accused of committing murder and was sentenced to life in prison. The evidence used to ‘lock him up’ was false and it was obvious that the Hurricane was innocent because he was willing to risk his freedom on one last court hearing. Also, the witnesses confessed to the police that he wasn’t the murderer. However this evidence did no use in court because he lived in a racial community and everyone was against him. He was trialled before an all white jury and because he was black, it was seen as a sufficient reason to put him away. Vincent Della Pescoe was the detective in charge of the Hurricane’s case and he had had past troubles with him before. This obviously would have had something to do with the decisions made. Della Pescoe changed the time of the shooting to match that of Rubin’s departure of the bar. While in gaol, Rubin realised that the evidence used to put him away was false and the signatures on the papers of the witnesses were forged by Della Pescoe. Not only had Della Pescoe forged the signatures, but he rejected all the witnesses’ claims e.g. one of the victims of the murder made it to hospital and before he died, he told Della Pescoe it wasn’t Rubin that did the shooting.
