...they called it single hitting but then they called it tagging. But graffiti in term of public and unsolicited markings has been around for ever. Some say it represents man desire and need for communication and the history of this type of communication dates back to one of the first act—drawing. The origins of graffiti go back to the beginnings of human, societal living. Graffiti has been found on uncovered, ancient, Egyptian monuments and graffiti even was preserved on walls in POMPEII. Graffiti is the plural of the Italian word “graffito” which means scratching. In plural, graffito signifies drawings, markings, patterns, scribbles or messages that are painted, written, or carved on a wall or surface. The word graffiti is now used to mean any wall writing or pictures or symbols or markings of any kind on a surface anywhere no matter what the motivation of the artists. Some people look at graffiti as a representation of a specific community or ethnic group. They use all available data in reviewing each graffiti (i.e., language, location, etc.) to illuminate the collective everyday life and feelings of the people of that particular culture. Graffiti can be seen then as a form of public art, carried on the canvases of the street, put up whether people like it or not. In creating these public art works, graffiti artists experience a level of risk and adventure, artistic and otherwise. Some of this graffiti can be also know as graffiti art, subway art or spray can art. Graffiti art is unpredictable – it is urban wild style that is every moving – changing – evolving and it’s confrontational. For most of its artist, graffiti is at least in part a quest for identity. The great challenge of graffiti is to create a design framework for the letters in ones name which is so personally tailored that it allows for the expression of attitude, opinions, emotions and soul. The are six different types of graffiti that is latrinalia, public, folk epigraphy, historical, tags and humorous. There are also seven fundamental forms of graffiti and are although there are many, over a hundred, different styles, the forms are consistently recognizable among graffiti artists. The forms are characterized by their complexities, placements and their sizes.
