"Work or starve" was his motto, and each colonist was required to spend four hours per day farming. Disease and hunger ravaged Jamestown. Two desperate colonists were tied to posts and left to starve as punishment for raiding the colonies' stores. One colonist even took to cannibalism, eating his own wife. The starving time made life in Virginia so difficult. The motives of these colonizers were to get some food so they can survive this tragic time, which they were going through. John Smith was one of the surviving original colonists. He was a soldier of fortune, adventure, an explorer. After some time when colonists arrived in Virginia, he became their acknowledged leader. The English people were frustrated realizing the inequity of their situation and knowing that they had little support from the colonial government, because they wanted to take control of the colonies. Bacon’s Rebellion: The Declaration 07/30/1676 p. 19-20 Nathaniel Bacon was a leader of a small rebellion to attack Indians who had been attacking other plantations and to overthrow the governor. Governor Berkeley was Governor of Virginia, who refused to let the planters kill the Indians. His refusal led to Bacon’s Rebellion. There were several complaints in Declaration such as “For having abused and rendered contemptible the magistrates of justice by advancing to places of judicature scandalous and ignorant favorites”. “For having protected, favored, and emboldened the Indians against his Majesty’s loyal subjects, never contriving, requiring, or appointing any due or proper means of satisfaction for their many invasions, robberies, and murders committed upon us”. There were Economic problems, such as declining tobacco prices, growing commercial competition from Maryland and the Carolinas, an increasingly restricted English market, and the rising prices from English manufactured goods caused problems for the Virginians. From the Bacon’s Rebellion the southern society were hurt in “wealth and influence, but they stood as one and forever behind the principle that blacks must have neither”.
