...ople are actively seeking some meaningful way in which they can show their support and offer assistance. Given the level of commitment to community planning and engagement already visible in Angus, this coming together to contribute to the re-building of devastated communities overseas could seek to re-affirm the importance of community locally and show what can be achieved in working together. Event description: Each event would consist of a Burns supper ¡V traditional or vegetarian ¡V with an address to the haggis, a minute silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives and those still suffering, and traditional Scottish music and dance. Local pipe bands, school orchestras, dance groups etc¡K should be encouraged to participate. In addition, poetry readings could feature those Burns poems most relevant ¡V see quotes above for example. As well as a small payment for the meal, additional fundraising such as a raffle could feature where possible. Organisational responsibility: Angus Council would take the lead in co-ordinating and facilitating the promotion of events throughout the area. A small organisational committee would refine and move forward with this plan, working with relevant council departments such as public relations and finance. Further sub-groups made up of council volunteers could then undertake specific tasks such as distribution of materials and so on. These volunteers could be sought by email and intranet messages to all council staff. Publicity and promotion: An information pack containing the following would be produced and made available: „X details of the purpose and nature of the initiative „X recipes for traditional and vegetarian Burns suppers „X the address to the haggis „X ¡¥how to donate¡¦ envelope and instructions And possibly „X A small symbolic badge or token indicating support of the initiative These packs could be obtained by contacting ACCESS line or collection from libraries, schools and other public buildings (or any participating private buildings such as banks, post offices etc¡K). In addition, a facility for providing translated packs should be offered. It is suggested that no charge is associated in obtaining the packs but interested parties might register with details of their event so as to obtain an accurate picture of activity across Angus. The Angus Council PR department could issue press releases across the Tayside media ¡V print, radio and television, and issue information on the Angus Council website, as well as the PPU making contact with all its community planning partners, local area partnerships and contacts. Monies raised: It is anticipated that any funds raised (individual donations or event proceeds) could be submitted via an envelope contained within the information pack. However, clarification would be required in terms of whether Angus Council would administer funds and then pass to The Disasters Emergency Committee - www.dec.org.uk ¡V which is the umbrella organisation co-ordinating UK fundraising.
