Lord of the flies and the bible
...n, the snake convinced the woman she could eat the apple, and not die; while in the Lord of the Flies, the Beast had most of the boys blinded to the evil in the human race. They do not realize they are doing something wrong. The island is simply a picture of real life; while the Beast makes it much more obvious evil always exists along side of good, and it is very difficult to separate the two. The Beast is an amazing example of Satan masquerading as good, so that He can win. The Lord of the Flies itself is an allusion to the Bible as this name was a title given to the Beelzebub. Everyone has this Beast in them. The Bible shows us this in The New Testament, Mark 3.22 when Jesus is accused of being evil; “He has the Beelzebub in him. It is the chief of the Demons who gives him the power to drive them out” If Jesus has evil in him why don’t we all? The answer is; we do, people have just started to try and hide it. Nobody is perfect, and the Devil, or Beast is present in everyone; in different quantities perhaps; but it is always there. It is always fighting against good, in an effort to triumph. The Beast shows Simon that he is determined to be the best when he proclaims, “There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast.” (158) The evil characteristics are in everyone, as are the good. They gave this name to the Beast so that they would not have to realize that the Beast is present all around them, regardless of their appearance or attitude. The Beelzebub is a spirit and characteristic of evil. It possesses people until they can’t handle it anymore. It is figured out at one point in the book that the Beast is only a characteristic in all of us; that it is not a character with horns and a pitchfork, but that it is the qualities each of us possess. No one believes him, as they do not want to admit they too possess these evil qualities. Simon says to everyone, “ What I mean is…Maybe it’s only us…” He then became inarticulate while he was trying to express and explain mankind’s essential illness and flaw. Evil vs. Good is the prominent reason for the Beast being there. The head tells Simon that he will perish and go to Hell, where the “Lord of the Flies” lives. The spirit spoke to him when it told him “You know perfectly well you’ll only meet me down there – so don’t try to escape.” (158) In the book of Timothy, it is stated that eventually there will be some people that abandon the Holy Spirit, and start to rely more and more on the spirit of a liar and a demon. The Beast tries it’s hardest to encourage people to believe more and more in being wicked and fraudulent; it aids in the corruption of some people. Simon remains one of the very last signs of a future that exists on the island. Simon is the most precise example of an allusion to the Bible in the LOTF. Simon himself is named after the disciple Simon Peter. Simon is Jesus’ brother, and they have the same goals in life; that are to bring joy and goodness into the lives of everyone. Simon is the only naturally good and non-possessed boy that is on the island. He is kind, and he is willing to work hard so that others are happy. Simon treats Piggy with respect and wants the best for him, while the others are not so kind. “…Wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy, who grabbed it.” (78) Simon takes life much more seriously than the rest of the boys and he has morals that the others do not understand. He can actually hear the voice of the beast and he is a very intelligent boy. When he is exploring with the rest of the boys he gets a strange sensation. “Simon... felt a flicker of incredulity – a beast with claws that scratched, that sat on a mountain-top, that left no tracks and yet was not fast enough to catch Samneric.” (112). He starts to...
