A Raisin in the Sun Character analysisOf Walter Lee
...d and loses it all. The white people Don’t not want the Younger family to move in to there neighborhood and try to offer them money but in the end they don’t take the money and they move into there new home. This play is set in the poor South side of Chicago, sometime after World War II, most of the play takes place inside the Youngers’ apartment. There are several themes in this play. The themes, one of which I believe is dreams. For example Mama dreams of a good home for Travis to grow up in, Walter dreams of investing in something like his liquor store so he can obtain wealth and Beneatha dreams of becoming a doctor. Another theme is pride, for example the family has pride in who they are and where the came from so much so they end up not taking the money from the white people. Also racism is a minor theme, the family is show racism by the white people and they have to make a major family decision because of it. In A Raisin in the Sun the character Walter Lee drastically changes his goals, relationships and values. These changes stem from other characters actions and thoughts that inspire Walter to change for the better. Almost all the characters had a hand in this change but the ones that stand out most are Mama, Ruth, Travis and Willy. Due to these characters Walter went from a man who only cared about his liquor store dream and getting rich no matter what it takes, even if it meant taking what wasn’t his to take and being willing to sell his family out for money from the white people. To a man who had morals and principle and was truly a good example for his son. In the first scene Walter is complaining about his situation and telling Ruth about the liquor store investment. He speaks harshly to her and says things like, ”that is just what is wrong with the colored woman in this world…”(Making Literature Matter 234) and “ We one group of men tied to a race of women with small minds!” (Making Literature Matter 235) He seems to show no respect for his wife and show no appreciation for what she does do. At the end of the play he shows a greater appreciation for his wife and is kinder, he says “I want to hang some real pearls round my wife’s neck”(Making Literature Matter 290) another thing that changed about Walter was his attitude towards his sister, Walter always seemed to run her dreams of being a doctor into the ground by saying things like “Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you so crazy ‘bout messing ’round with sick people- then go be a nurse like other women- or just get married and be quiet”(Making Literature Matter 236). In the end though he finally realized that it was a good dream and became proud of her. He said “And that’s my sister over there ands she’s going to be a doctor- and we are very proud” (Making Literature Matter 292) Walt...
