Utilitarianism
...easoning as involving the moral decisions that result in the largest amount of good and the least amount of pain for the majority of people. In looking in depth at each world, and the benefits of living in each, I have determined that the Kantian world is going to be my residence. The reason that I have decided to stay away from utilitarianism is because I believe Kant’s ideas on an individual’s ability to reason which gives them ethics to follow. Any action taken in utilitarianism can be ethical, but doesn’t have to be; ethics can be shunned if the action being taken is for the greater good of the populace. Slavery, discrimination, genocide and many other atrocious acts can be justified through utilitarianism, and this is the reason I would not like to live in this type of society. As long as I am in the majority, it would be ok, but when I must take my turn to be in slavery, or to be discriminated against, this is where I draw the line on utilitarianism. Using the ideas of Kant however, we can reason that a Kantian society would be one in which every decision is ethical. If every decision is an ethical one, this world would be one in which good law would flourish. Due to the personal sense of moral duty instilled by ones ability to reason, there would be a personal level of ethics that everyone followed.
