This has come to be known as the sudden death Overtime rules in college are a little different. In college the team with the most points at the end of an overtime period wins. In college sudden death is only used when championship games go into overtime. The game clock is more of a factor in college football than it is in the NFL. In college the game clock stops every time a team gets a first down. An example of this is when the gators lost to Tennessee. With forty-five seconds remaining in the game Tennessee was able to move the ball sixty-yards up field and kick a field goal to take the lead. Most football teams in any league like to run the clock down when there ahead with less three minutes left in the fourth quarter. In an NFL game if a team is winning and they are on offense with less than four minutes remaining in the game they usually win. Take the Jaguars and the Colts game for example, the Jaguars turned the ball over to the Colts with 3:57 remaining in the game. The Colts simply reverted to plays designed to waste time of the clock. If the rules had been reversed the outcome of those games might have been different. Two areas in which college football and the NFL rules differ are running the football and advancement of a fumbled ball.
