...rendel while talking with Hrothgar, he says “God must decide who will be given to death’s cold grip.” This belief of Beowulf is also true when he battles with Grendel’s mother. There is also a strong sense that God's protection must be earned; a warrior must first be true to his values, courage, honesty, pride, and humility and only then will he earn God's protection. This can be concluded from the battles of Beowulf with Grendel and his mother because the good wins over the evil both times. In accumulation to earthly protection, there is also the intellect that all earthly good, be it success or wealth, derives from God. An example pf this is portrayed when Beowulf is about to fight Grendel's mother in her cave. Beowulf sees a great weapon hanging on the wall. He does not take credit for this awareness. The credit is instead given to God. Cain was the son of Adam and Eve and was the one who murdered Abel, his brother, out of a jealous rage for God's favor to Abel. This shows that Grendel had more than just a dislike for Hrothgar’s men; the song that they sang was showing Grendel that his ancestor was looked upon as the bad person and was therefore the underlying concept for Grendel's rage. This was the constant reminder to Grendel of his evil past and thus his reasoning for his actions. When one lives as a child of God and does what is right in life, heaven is their final destination.
