Jackaloupe Origin Myth

...ooked different than one another. Why did they have to pick on him? After awhile, he gathered the courage to confront the other animals. He asked each and every one of them, one by one, why they made fun of him. He told them, “We all look different. Why do you pick on me?” He asked them why they wouldn’t be his friends. After asking what he thought was every animal on Earth, the only responses that he got was more laughter and harassing. The jackalope lived confined for many years before he came out again. While he was out he found a new creature that God put on Earth. The new animal was called a raccoon. The raccoon lived alone, much like the jackalope. The other animals made fun of the raccoon also. After awhile, the two became friends. The raccoon told the jackalope that his stripes were the only reason the other animals didn’t like him and the jackalope explained that his antlers with his small body was the reason he was treated unfairly. The two friends decided the only way that they could be happy was to change their appearance. They thought of ways to do this and finally came to a solution. They wanted to look “normal” like the other animals so the jackalope asked the raccoon if he would use his teeth to grind away the jackalope’s antlers. The raccoon agreed and he went at it. Forcefully, he gnawed at the antlers. They were too strong. After awhile they gave up and decided to try something to make the raccoon look different. The raccoon and the jackalope went off into the forest to look for a tree with a lot of broken bark. They found the tree and the raccoon ground the bark with its teeth into dust. They walked to the river and used a piece of log with the top open to put the bark dust in. They put the log in the river and the dust became wet. The jackalope dumped the wet dust on the raccoon’s skin and after it dried it stayed a dark color. The woodchuck hurried away after telling the jackalope that he would talk to the other animals about being nice to him. This is why there are woodchucks today. When the woodchuck was “born” it went to the rest of the animals and talked. The other animals loved the woodchuck. It became the most popular animal on Earth.
