...r continued to get poorer. Poverty stricken towns led to dirty streets and polluted towns. By the late eighteen hundreds Political bosses, and machines started to organize. They cheated their way to getting rich, ate all the peoples’ money and only made things worse. They were irresponsible and didn’t take care of things. This angered a lot of people and reformers tried to take charge, mainly the progressives. They wanted to change unfair business practice, poor sanitation, political bosses, etc. They wanted the greater control of the government. They also wanted to change the working conditions and wages. The United States was struggling for peace with the socially, economically, and politically. Then Theodore Roosevelt stepped in and got a hold of things. To help stop political bosses, and machines, he came up with “The Square Deal” as his campaign slogan. He believed it would balance interests of business, consumers, and labor. It called for limiting the power of trusts, promoting public health, safety, and improving working conditions, all which were very important issues at the time. He believed companies should be forced to behave responsibly. Teddy quotes, “We don’t wish to destroy corporations, but we do wish to subserve the public good” In nineteen zero-two there was a mine workers strike. Roosevelt worked it out and everyone got their way. The strikers received shorter days, with larger pay, and the company wouldn’t have to recognize or negotiate with the workers. Teddy also responded to food and drug companies that were releasing potentially dangerous products. He passed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act.
