Four guidelines to overcome communication barriers. 1. Understand your intended audience. Compose the communication with your specific audience in mind. 2. Make the give and take of communication a pleasant and encouraging, rather than negative, process. An atmosphere of open-ended communication without fear of negativism, will allow your audience to freely give their feedback. In addition, the fewer levels of hierarchy feedback has to travel through facilitates its forthcoming. 3. Make your communication as responsibly and forthright as possible. Is your communication fair, even-handed and ethical? Would you be embarrassed if your communication was put under scrutiny? 4. Communication should be efficient and effective.
