Character study of Diana in Absent Friends
...the Paul cheating with Evelyn situation. She tries to make Evelyn confess to her crimes but not by shouting at her or even accusing her. On the other hand when she does explode her emotions will coming screaming out of her to a point at which it seems irrational. Take the situation with the Canadian Mounted Police. There is no immediate or direct reason with which she brings this up but if you look deeper and read the subtext of what she is saying then you can infer a few interesting points. It seems that she remembers the incident of the coat because it included her sister Barbara being jealous of her which could be said to be linked with the relationship between Paul and Barbara. The Canadian Mounted Police story told of Diana not doing what she wanted but waht she was told. You could then speculate that Diana did not actually want to marry Paul but instead did as she was told. These two examples on their own seem almost irrelevant and a grown woman going into such a hysteria as she did as a result of her telling these stories seem highly irrational.
