Reflective Analysis Paper

... in a stress free environment. As noted about a patient’s health can be affected by the patient’s environment. Health can be defined as a patients well being. This includes the physical and emotional well being of the patient. An example of this in my practice is shown in my everyday encounters with patients as a nurse. I see people who are sick and help to nurse then back to their optimal health. I believe that health is different for everyone but to me it is feeling the best you can both physically and mentally. There is one patient that I took care of that had this type of experience. He was a gentleman who was in his early sixties who came in an out of hospital due to his long history of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease. He would come to hospital approximately once every four months and stay for months at a time. Every time he would come into hospital he would be mad at himself and depressed due to the physical state he would be in; therefore his emotional health would be poor. But as the nurses on the unit helped to nurse him back to his optimal health his emotional well-being would improve as well as his physical well being. By the time this patient was ready to be discharged home his emotional and physical well being was where it should be according to what his optimal health was. Nursing fits into all of these metaparadigms. Nursing can be defined as the main link in the heath care system that helps to connect the patient to the external environment. As defined earlier environment does not necessarily mean the hospital setting. But for this section of the paper I will explore the hospital as the patient’s environment. Nurses play a key role when it comes to caring for a patient. Nursing is a profession that works with other professions to deliver care to patient. Nursing is about caring for patients and advocating for their well being, and in turn helping them to reach their optimal health. An example of this in my nursing practice is what I do daily. Helping patient’s to express what they are feeling emotionally and physically to themselves, family members and others in the health care system including doctors, respiratory therapists, and social workers. This also includes working with the other professions to address abnormal finding and complete tasks such as completing doctors’ orders, providing physiotherapy. I believe that nursing is one of the key aspects of the metaparadigm that helps to hold everything together. Now that each of the four nursing metaparadigms; person, environment, health and nursing have been defined I will critically reflect on what each of these concept mean to me. As defined earlier a person is an important part of the nursing metaparadigm. The definition discussed earlier in this paper is something that has been learned throughout my life. My basic interactions with my family, friends and teachers are the main people that influenced how I define a person. I can’t provide you with an exact time that I learn this definition. I believe that it has been a working progress and still continues to be to this day. Throughout my childhood my family especially my parents have helped me to realize who I am as a person. I feel that I am myself a physical being but who has an emotional side. My parents have helped me to realize that one does not exist without the other and I still believe that to this day. Through my education teachers not only teach you valid information about life but also help you to identify key characteristics about yourself. They also help you to interact with others and learn what characteristics you like and those you do not. I believe that all of the experience that I encountered with my family, teachers, and friends I was able to identify how I defined a person. This has been an evolving since the first day of my life and will continue to change. Now that I look back on how this definition of a person came to be I have identified a key turning point in the process of this definition. I believe that there was a turning point when I was in nursing school. Nursing has allowed me to explore further what a person is defined as. Many people allow me to know ...
