The Kent State massacre occurred at Kent State University, Ohio, and involved the shooting of students by the National Guard on May 4, 1970. Over the course of four days, Kent State students protested against an American invasion of Cambodia and it resulted in the tragic and undefined deaths of nine students. ... Downtown Kent was supposedly warm and spring like. ... All these three factors led to Mayor Leroy Satrom to declare the city under a state of emergency. Forty-three windows were broken in downtown Kent, during an unprompted and militant rampage by hundreds of angry anti-war students and Vietnam veterans also. ... Following a night of civil unrest in Kent, Governor James Rhodes was ordered to send the National Guard to Kent to help maintain order. Kent State Universitys Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) building, an unstable, old, wooden military science barracks, was attacked and burned to the ground. ... Did the authorities stay away so the students would burn the building and create an excuse to bring the Ohio National Guard to Kent State? ... Why has no student ever been convicted of arson at Kent State in 1970? Who really burned the ROTC building at Kent State? ... With none of these logical questions answered, the National Guard still arrived on the Kent State campus while the building was ablaze during that night on May 2. Two days of anti-property violence by Kent students on May 1 and 2 was followed by two days of anti-student violence by the Ohio National Guard on May 3 and 4. The destruction of the ROTC building was a major event leading to the violence at Kent State over the next two days, but the mystery over who set the fire has not been solved
