For a soldier who’s in a battle field, he is paranoid and anxious, so everyone appears as a threat, so the most important thing to do is to survive. Likewise, in the poem “The man he killed,” a soldier shot one of his enemies during a war; where he later wondered of who this man was, as mentioned in the story “Had he and I but met.” He also tried to put the person in his situation; perhaps the person is in the army for similar reasons. He feels guilty and remorseful that he shot the man because he could have been his friend if he had met him in different time in life. One thing about war is the fact that, a soldier does not get to think instantly. The decision is made base on fear that the enemy may hit him first with a bullet.
