The Courtship of Mr. Lyon
...Mr. Lyon was happy, then the house seemed to be happy. When he was alone, and desolate without beauty, the house seemed to take on the same characteristics, almost as if Mr. Lyon's house was somehow physically connected to him. I feel that the ominous presence of the almost living house was an interesting setting and made the story seem more magical, even fairy tale-like. The girl in this story was referred to only as beauty. This says a lot about how she was perceived by the other characters. Beauty was portrayed as the object of perfection that made the beasts life complete. She was full of innocence and good will. Beauty had an unspoken obligation with her father, she would do anything to make his life better. Beauty showed this by staying with the beast while her father went out to take care of his financial troubles. She was scared and intimidated at first, but soon found out that Mr. Lyon was a good-natured gentleman. She fell in love with him. Mr. Lyon was portrayed as the beast, because of his looks. He had an ominous presence about him that seemed to be echoed throughout his house. He was lonely until he found beauty, then his life took on a new meaning. Once beauty had left him, he became weak and unable to hunt. It almost seems that he was better off before he met beauty, because he was content. Once his love left and did not return it destroyed him inside, he almost died. All of this emoti...
