The first way in which the first and second stages are alike is that Charlotte was accustomed to getting along with people from the same sex. While living in England, Charlotte went to a school that only allowed girls. She got used to living with girls. While on the ship, she got used to living only with people from the male sex. She would only have the crewmen to talk with. Another comparison between the first and second stages of her life is that she was always during the orders of someone. She never had the right to do anything by her own will. While with her family, she always had to follow the orders of her parents. When her mom or dad gave her a certain instruction, she had to follow it. When in the ship, she was under the orders of Captain Jaggery. She would have to do as told by him or be punished. The three different times were also very different. In the first stage, she would live with her family. She would wear her dress, gloves, and bonnet. She would have a maid for every of her needs. She would not have to do anything for herself. She would go to school at a School in which only girls were allowed. In the second period, she was at the ship. Life during the ship was not much like that she was used to. She would wear clothes like that of the crewmen working on the deck of the ship. While on deck, she would be barefoot when in England she would hardly take her shoes off. Her name was no longer “Miss Doyle” but Charlotte. She would have to do the daily chores like those of the crewmen on the ship. On the third stage, she was living with her family again. She wasn’t used to getting everything done for her. She would always want to do her own things and not have other people do it for her. She would not like to be called “Miss Doyle” or any other name that wasn’t Charlotte. These are the changes that Charlotte would not accustom so easily. First, wearing a dress, gloves, and her shoes. While on the ship she went to deck barefoot.
