Marlow views this new land as completely untamed and evil, being so used to the upright society life of Europe, but eventually he unveils that it is this that created the devastation and inhumanity among Africa. Although now realizing why the nation is so distraught and still wanting to find the good within it, he participates in a lie that says imperialism is justly supported by sound ideals. He closes his eyes and chooses not to see the truth of what is right in front of him. The “darkness” that is portrayed in this novel is not that of evil or an actual shade of color, but that of mankind and individuals. The choices that are presented and the option we choose create the person that we are and will become. Most of the story is told in the dark or in a dark way, the story being told by Marlow takes place at night on the ship, and the somber attitude carried from cover to cover.
