Jealousy Isn't Love
...th: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.” (Corinthians 13: 4-8). I interpret verses 4-5 to be implying that jealousy is and should be nonexistent with regards to true love between two people. If two people are in love jealousy won’t play any kind of role in the relationship. In today’s society many people who are “in love” think that they need to act possessive over each other. When a relationship between two people is about love then jealousy will lose out and trust will win. Verses 5-7 continue on about how true love should be defined. Love should be patient, love does not seek its own interests but rather seeks truthfulness over wrong doings. The seventh verse is self-explanatory in that love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things, love is all of those things. The eighth verse is trying to express how powerful love is. Love is more powerful than some of the greatest God-given gifts such as the gift of knowledge, the gift of prophecies, and the “gift of tongues”, which is a metaphor for the ability to understand and speak other languages. Love is greater than all of these and is meant to last longer than all three. The passage as a whole is an explanation of why and how love is the greatest give God has given, it is longer lasting than anything in the world even the gift of knowledge.
