There’s nothing like showing up to a black tie event in a cocktail dress and feeling uncomfortable and out of place for the entire evening. And lastly, I consider the group of people that I’ll be spending time with… If it’s a crowd that’s more conservative, I’ll may choose a traditional outfit……….. When I was in grade school I attended an institution that required a school uniform as our dress code. The uniform consisted of a polo shirt and khaki pants or a pleaded dress/skirt. We wore this clothing because it was what was expected of us. I didn’t like the style and thought it was rather boring, but I did it because my parents enforced the policy. I tried to find many ways to make this dress code a bit more unique. I would wear a rhinestone belt around my skirt in hopes that maybe I would stand out amongst my peers. I would also fancy colorful hair accessories and bright colored sneakers or sandals. Wearing the same thing in school eliminated the competition. It also removed the meaningless hallway conversations about who was wearing the nicer outfit. The school’s philosophy was to focus on our education and put less emphasis on fashion. While I thoroughly disagreed with their rationale, I wasn’t at a point to completely challenge the rules. I went along with the regulations set forth by the school and tried not to be “completely” different than my classmates. When I reached high school, my craze for fashion had matured and my taste for style had gotten a lot more expensive. I recall being extremely brand conscious and alert of all labels. The choice of brand during this time was Guess, by Marciano, Gap clothing, Polo, by Ralph Lauren, Triple-Goose Down jackets and the must have accessory was a custom three-fingered gold ring. Being able to dress without restraints gave me a sense of freedom. Each evening I spent the last 30 minutes before bedtime preparing my outfit for the following day.
