...f underground pipes. Hyperion is designed to take in 450 million gallons of wastewater every day but only takes in a fraction of that amount during the non-rainy season. Hyperion wastewater treatment system is a serious of filtering and cleaning areas. The water flows into the plant through “headworks” where the first materials are removed from the wastewater. “Headworks” uses a series of metal bars and screens to capture large debris. The water then flows into the primary treatment plant were coagulants are added causing solids to sink to the bottom and oil and grease to float to the top. The remaining solids are then pumped into giant “digesters” where bacteria and oxygen are pumped in to break down the remaining organic solids. Hyperion’s 70 foot digesters special egg shape prevents sediment from gathering at the bottom of the tank causing damage and clogs, this special design was first used at Hyperion. Now that the organic materials have been pretty well filtered out, the water flows into settling tanks where it will remain for four hours while the final solids and microorganisms settle to the bottom and are skimmed away.
