Similarities between the Suburbs and Urban Gangs

...ally provides for all members. In both instances, there is respect between each individual in each of the families. The suburban father realized the difficult task his wife was about to take on, and respected her decision to stay home and look after their children. There is much respect throughout the urban gang as well. Each gang member not only looks after themselves, but also offers protection for ever member in the gang. All members of both families work together and make sure they “have each other’s backs”. In the second story, the main character respects the wishes of his civilian girlfriend when she asks him to put away his gun. He did so to avoid causing a scene, and ultimately, bloodshed. The relationship roles in both families are also similar. In the suburban family, there are the typical relationships between the husband and wife, parent and child, and sibling to sibling. The same can be said for the relationships between the gang members. The leader of the gang usually acts as a sort of parent figure for all of the other gang members, who can be viewed as the leader’s “children”.
