...ne, and she is a very tenacious person. Through out this piece of literature you can assume this poor old woman is going deaf. At the beginning she thinks she hears different kinds of animals. Towards the end of the story she is in the doctor’s office where the nurse is talking to her. She seems to either not hear or just take her time. Her inability to hear correctly could come from different origins. It could come from her not paying attention to what people say to her. She could have just not been paying attention to what the nurse was telling her in the office. On the other hand, Phoenix’s mind being slow to the extent where it takes her time to answer could be her problem. She could have been thinking about other things, which caused her to take time for the nurse after she was finished thinking. Whatever the reason, her problem of hearing shows. The thought of Phoenix not being fully sane comes from all the different parts of the story. Throughout the beginning and into the middle, Phoenix holds conversations with herself, animals, non-living things (the scarecrow), and pretty much anything that will listen. She also stands still as if not scared when the white hunter points a gun at her. She seemed as if she was completely comfortable in that predicament like it happened to her often.
