Huck Finn

...r his mother died. He has a father but it’s as though he didn’t because he is never around, being away for months at a time and is always drunk. He is only interested in his son for his six thousand dollar fortune. Huck has been left with Widow Douglas who imposes manners upon him like table manners, being clean, going to school, and to church. Huck does not want to be civilized by Widow Douglas, or be deprived from his freedom by living with his drunken father in a cabin. This is the reason why Huck seeks his freedom and takes off on a long journey down the Mississippi River with Jim. Jim on the other hand is a slave. He runs off because he is being accused of a murder and unites with Huck on the long journey to both of their freedoms. Jim wants to be a free man, raise money, and then buy his family so they can all be free. The central theme of freedom is represented upon both Huck and Jim. Oftentimes, they were so difficult that it seemed like Huck and Jim would never reach freedom however they stayed strong and overcame all obstacles in their way to finally be free in the end. One obvious obstacle is the fact that Jim is a runaway slave. Many times throughout the book Huck has to lie, as he does so often, and say that it is his slave so that Jim will not be arrested and taken back to its rightful owner. Probably the biggest obstacle they face is the King and the Duke. Two men fakers, who claim to be a king and a duke.
