Individuals with Down Syndrome are oftenly smaller than their peers, and their physical and intellectual development is slower. There is a wide variation in mental abilities, behavior, and development process in people diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Their intellectual development will be slower and will take more time than it would for someone who does not have this syndrome. Their level of retardation may range from mild to severe, with the majority of the people functioning in the mild to moderate range (Internet). Their language variation is much slower, as also in motor development. There are programs though that can help with the development of a child with Down Syndrome that offer special instruction in teaching their child language, social skills, and self help. There is no way to prevent the chromosome abonormality that causes Down Syndrome, although the chances do increase as the age of the mother increases and some suggest that older fathers might also increase the risk. Women over the age of 35 has a one in 40 chance of conceiving a child with Down Syndrome and this chance increases gradually as the mother ages more (Internet).
