... Manan Island, Sophie and Cody took an excursion and rode over to Wood Island to explore for the day. Sophie also shared her stories about Bompie (her grandfather) with Cody. Her relationship with her cousin Brian was not nearly as close but it improved as the novel progressed. Brian was very quiet and serious, always making lists of things to do and these were very annoying to Sophie and Cody. However towards the end of the book Brian developed a sense of humor and stayed with Sophie and Cody at Sophie’s home for a couple of weeks after the journey. Sophie matures and becomes more self assured throughout the journey. At the beginning, she felt excited about being out at sea but seemed to always be worried that some terrible tragedy would happen. Later I learned that that was because her parents had drowned. Sophie was given a lot of responsibility on the boat and proved to her uncle’s and cousins that she was a very capable person who could fix things and could be relied on to steer the boat. That made her much more confident. Sophie was able to work with her family so that everyone survived the terrible wind and storms and that also made her stronger. Sophie seemed to get over her fear of water because of what happened to her parents. Sophie always loved to tell stories about her grandfather, Bompie, mostly to Cody but also to her uncles and cousin Brian. The Bompie stories usually involved a struggle where her grandfather survived after being covered ...
