... both sides. We shouldn’t favor a group because of what their ethnic background is. If an African American gets “special treatment” because of there race, tell me how that’s different from getting “special treatment” as a slave during the times of slavery? Sure, one is good and the other is bad, but they in essence serve the same purpose, treating some one differently because of there race, i.e. the definition of racism. Many students in the minority do not support Affirmative Action. That sounds odd because basically it’s like saying “no” to free money, but many feel its like getting helped because they cant help themselves. It stands as a pride issue for many African Americans, Latinos, and Native-Americans. At the same time I feel that some people do need the extra boost whether they like it or not. Usually this is the case with lower income families. But what about low-income white families? This is why Affirmative Action should be changed, not necessarily thrown away. Instead of race, Affirmative Action should be set on a needs based system. Not all minorities are poor and not all majorities are rich. Students coming from lower income families or poor neighborhoods should be considered over those of higher income, those who have less and need more than the rest of us. The system should be designed to help not discriminate. There are African Americans, Latinos, and Native-Americans who come from wealthy families and can afford to pay for college.
