Some people may be confused and think that being gay is purely a sexual thing, but in reality homosexuality is a lot deeper than that and has to deal with feelings and emotions, more than just sexual activities. Just as straight people feel about the opposite sex, gays have all those same feelings and emotions but towards the same sex. Eddie Escarzga, a gay man from San Francisco, does not understand why people are having such a problem with allowing gays to marry. “I believe that gay people and straight people are no different. We are…people! What separates us is the fact that we are sexually attracted to the same sex, and straight people are attracted to the opposite Matzek 3 sex. Now love between two human beings is a sacred thing, a commitment means something whether you are gay or straight. Just because I love a man, and I am a man, is my love different from a man who loves a woman? I, as a gay man, only ask to be equal to that of a straight man, because I am no different than he is.” The government should not have any say on how feelings are supposed to act in someone’s life. A document written by John Locke, which our government used to form itself, ensures an individual’s right to pursue happiness. Gay people pursue their happiness through same sex relationships. Gay people cannot control being gay. They do not choose who they are attracted or not attracted to. Nobody knows what causes one to be homosexual. A person’s sexual orientation is believed to be established at a very early age. Studies have shown that people are born this way. In Seventeen magazine there is an article about identical twin sisters who are both gay. This suggests that being gay isn’t just a decision made by the individual. Many gay people notice something different about themselves as early as age four or five. A person’s sexual orientation cannot be changed. Before the 1980’s it was unusual for a person to openly state that they were gay. A lot of homosexual people would marry a person of the opposite sex. Being gay was not openly talked about. To make things even worse on gay people, HIV, a deadly virus, quickly spread throughout the gay community. This left people believing that gay people were diseased and dirty. Now that gay people can “come out of the closet” a little bit more easily, proud gay communities have been formed all over the country. Stars such as Ellen DeGeneris and Rosie O’Donnell openly admitted to being gay. They help support Matzek 4 the gay community and are roll models for gays. Christina Aguilera had two gay men kissing in her music video for her song “Beautiful”. Which showed her support for people who believe in themselves regardless the situation. I believe it is important for people to believe in themselves and be satisfied with what they have and who they are as a person. Gay pride was created in the 1990’s and runs through out the gay communities and supports them and helps them stick together. Gay pride is represented by a rainbow flag. They have frequent gay pride parades, where not only gay people march for their pride. At a lot of the parades they raise money for programs and charities. Gay pride week is June 19- June 26. The gay community supports gays/lesbians, bisexual people, transsexuals/transvestites. Along with gay pride there is also the Gay Straight Alliance which is an organization to help stop homophobia. 20,000 students are harassed every year because of their sexual orientation. I think it’s time to start putting an end to the gay/straight discrimination. Gay supporters are all over the country. Some show their support by simply accepting the fact that someone is gay. If people are accepting gays it should allow it to become more easier for gays to eventually marry their same sex. One main argument behind not letting gay people marry each other is that according to the bible marriage is the binding between a man and a woman. According to the constitution there should be a separation between church and state. Not everybody believes in God or certain religions. Therefore, legally we should not make them abide by the rules or beliefs of certain groups or religions. In some cases there are certain religions that do not recognize gay people as sinners. God cannot be recognized as a form of Matzek 5 argument as no one knows for sure he even exists. Many people believe He exists but a belief is not a solid form of argument.
