Instead, the author says that as we grow up, attitudes and habits are learned and are passed on through parents just by interacting with them, not by inheriting the chemical imbalance. The fact that antidepressants have been able to elevate the brain chemicals needed to improve a persons mood, show that the brain is off balance during clinical depression. Patients are told that if you quit taking your medication there is a good chance you will become depressed again. Corey Nahman, a registered Pyarmacist, includes in his article Depression Drug Database, examples of the two of the most common antidepressants: SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and Tricyclic Antidepressants. These antidepressants have been proven to combat depression by altering the brain's chemical nature, such as its level of serotonin. However the scientists that believe depression is a way of learned bad attitudes may suggest one to become more flexible in their thinking alone using only counciling alone instead of taking an antidepressant. Thus the chemical problem is not treated. Since many people avoid finding help for depression they begin to treat themselves, somtimes without knowing it. I feel the brain imbalance is so strong that the person becomes addicted to their choosen self medication some of which are illegal drugs, alchohol, pornography, tabbacco and food. In, In My Story, a personal expirence by Kazmac, the author self medicates with amphetamines saying, "Wow! I felt all my depression lift, I felt normal. Soon I couldn't cope without the drugs.'' I believe since the chemical imbalance is always there, that if the person is not properly treated they will turn to an addiction lasting a lifetime. Those believing that depression is non-biological think that the depression can be solved by simply changing, not by addictions.
