Mission Gon Wrong

...as. Once you hit the road, it was about a mile and a half to the Indian post. We got to the Indian post at about 10:30 p.m. It was a full moon so we could see clearly. The Indian post was a big field with a teepee in the middle. There were woods off to the right where the scouts would pitch their tents. There was a trail that let up through these woods and at the top was a latrine. All of the scouts were in the teepee listening to the Indian guide tell stories, so we snuck up to the teepee and peaked inside. One girl kept looking back at us but we figured that since it was light inside and dark outside no one would see us peaking in. Off we went up to the camp sites. We walked up to the latrine to find out where the trail went and checked where all the tents were. As we headed back to the field, we heard a girl scout say, “There were some boys from another scout troop spying on us from under the teepee.” And then another scout yelled, “Let’s go kick their butts!” We froze. We did not know what to do. As we saw scouts pouring out of the teepee, we took off into the woods. My friend and I hid behind a giant tree, as lights and screams filled the once darks woods. I told Dave to stay calm and don’t move. As the lights drew near, Dave lost his cool and took off into the woods. If we were caught, we would have both been fired. I knew Dave wouldn’t rat me out, so I let them chase him while I stayed where I was. As everybody ran off after Dave, I moved as far up into the woods as I could. I could see a beam of light every now and then and hear muffled sounds in the distance. I had no idea if Dave was ok or not and the reality that I was alone in the middle of the woods in the middle of the night was starting to sink in. The only way I knew how to get out was back down through the campsite, into the field. It was now almost midnight. I sat by myself getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, listening to the eerie but soothing sound of the whippoorwill. I had to sit there and listen closely to the fading sounds of the scouts. After I sat awhile I figured everyone was asleep, I made up my mind to attempt to sneak out of the woods. I started walking very slowly but it seemed the slower I walked the louder I crunched leaves and sticks. Suddenly, I heard a cough and the unzipping of a tent. I flattened myself on the ground and held my breath. One of the scout masters came out of the tent and started shining his light towards me. Every muscle in my body was frozen. The scoutmaster walked to the edge of the trail into the opening, smoked a cigarette, stood there for about 5 minutes, and then went back to his tent. He started snoring 45minutes later, the whole while I was laying face down in bugs. I sat up and decided I would take my boots off and walk trying to hop from dirt spot to dirt spot in the woods so I wouldn’t make any noise. Finally, after what seemed like hours, I made it to the clearing. I bolted, running as fast as I could, across the field onto the dirt road and again into the darkness. I stopped and threw on my boots and continued to walk. As my adrenaline wore off, I again realized I was in the middle of the woods at night. I pulled out my pocket knife and held it at my side just in case. As I reached the main...
