...ly for the next 10 years. The title of this short story “The Necklace” is singular but in reality there are two necklaces. The story takes on a twist when it turns out that the diamond necklace that Mrs. Loisel borrowed from her friend was a fake. So actually the story should be plural since there are two different necklaces discussed in the story, the fake necklace and the real necklace. When Mrs. Loisel visits Mrs. Forrestier, she goes to look through her friend’s jewelry collection. “Mrs. Forrestier went to her mirrored wardrobe, took out a large jewel box, opened it, and said to Mrs. Loisel: “Choose my dear.”” (Maupassant 7) Mrs. Loisel looked through her jewelry and took a while to decide upon which item she might want. “Suddenly she found a superb diamond necklace in a black satin box, and her heart throbbed with desire for it.” (8) Mrs. Loisel then chose the necklace and left for home. Now the necklace was so stunning looking that Mrs. Loisel did not even for a second think that this necklace could have been anything other than real. After attending the ball, Mrs. Loisel and her husband begin to head back home. Before getting into a car to head home, Mrs. Loisel realizes that she has lost Mrs. Forrestier’s diamond necklace. After searching frantically for the necklace, Mrs. Loisel and her husband give up for the night. They take out loans to replace the necklace that was lost. After 10 years of sacrificing to pay off the loans Mrs. Loisel runs into Mrs. Forrestier on the street. She tells Mrs. Forrestier the story of how she had lost her diamond necklace and bought her a new one. Mrs. Forrestier responds with “Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was only costume jewelry.
