..., Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife long for the comfort of a friend. As a result of the lifestyle of that era, it is very difficult to build a good friendship, so these characters settle for laying their troubles on a stranger's ear. As humans often do, they feed off of each other's weaknesses. A prime example of this is when Lennie visits Crooks. Crooks tells Lennie how miserable his life is then criticizes Lennie's dream and his dependence on George, threatening that George may not return. Crooks delights oin Lennie's destress. We find that strength does not only come from the strongest but is originally born of weakness. Shortly after this scene Curley's wife threatens to have Crooks lynched. This again supports Steinbeck's theme that humans have a predatory nature. Anothe...
