Also this woman isn’t allowed to work, this also is an example of men oppressing women, they feel that women are inferior, and are not capable of holding a respectable position. Many times in this story the woman is writing and she must stop so her husband does not catch her doing this, he feels she is not well enough to write. This is an illustration of the male society not taking a women work seriously. John is using her illness, a weakness as an excuse to say she cannot write, this illness could represent femininity and how society uses femininity as an excuse to bar women from expressing themselves. In the story the woman says, “no one would believe what an effort it is to do what little I am able to, dress, entertain, and order things.” This plays into the male opinion that women should stay at home and entertain guests, cook and clean. The room that this woman has to stay in without restoration is a prime example of men giving women second best and expecting them to be happy with it. John says the she should “not give way to such fancies.” This is a model of how men feel women shouldn’t dream or reach for things or conditions that will better them or their situations.
