The Boy Who Danced With A Tank

...phasis that fact. He then goes onto say : “The body is created by loving But a tank is made of fear and hate” This is to show that tanks aren’t suppose to fight against humans because there so different. The body I made by loving because you make love and have a child. A tank however is made for only one thing- war. War is fear and hate, no one likes war, or noone should like war. People get killed, people are scared and lifes are ruined. These two things, humans and tanks, should not fight against each other. Humans are so pure and they are made of something that is wholesome. Tanks are made for death and destruction and only that. For tanks to fight against humans is wrong. The second stanza is all about the army and the soldiers advancing on the students: “ Armoured cars and heads in helmets Rank on rank on rank on rank” That is the opening line to stanza two. This emphasises the size of the army by repeating the words “rank on”. The next lines of the stanza are really important. “The hearts of the soldiers were trembling But the eyes of the soldiers were blank” This, to me could mean two things. The first thing is that it goes back to the subject of humans and tanks. By saying the soldiers hearts were trembling shows that they care. Humans cant help but care, they cant help but show emotion whether it be fear, hate or love. The tank only shows one emotion- hate. However by then going on to say that the soldiers’ eyes were blank shows that they are willing to block out all the emotions. Its like they are looking at what there about to do as a job. It was a job and it was necessary to do it. The second thing it could mean is that the soldiers don’t have any freedom. I think that if the soldiers didn’t do what the government told them to they would be killed. They are being forced to kill others to save themselves basically. There eyes are blank because they know that if they don’t do this they will die but in their hearts they know what they are about to do is wrong. Saving their lives overshadow the wrong things that they are about to do so they will kill the students to save themselves. The third stanza is all about the boy “dancing” with the tank. The first two lines of the poem describe what the student was doing to stop the tank. If the tank moved one way the boy would follow it and if it moved the other way the boy would also go in front of it “The tank moved left The boy stepped right” The third line of the third stanza is significant because its shows that the boy knows he is free and he knows what he doing is helping people. “Paused like he was having fun” I think he was having fun. He would have been scared but he would have liked what he was doing because he was standing up for something he believed in -something he would die for. The student knows he might die but he is still doing it. He has made the decision to try and stop the tank; he has already accepted that he might die so he is free. If you know you could die you’re more...
