... and Dr. Nemur, to use Charly for the experiment. Dr. Strauss, a neurosurgeon, performs an operation on Charly that involves removing certain brain tissue and enriching enzymes. The operation does not give Charly immediate effects, but it allows things he learns to stick. He now learns things at a supernormal rate. He looks up words in the dictionary once, and never has to look them up again. He can absorb an entire page in a book in seconds. The only problem is that although Charly has surpassed everyone intellectually, he is still a child emotionally. He is just now starting to experience love and hate. He is in love with Alice Kinnian. His crush on her remains a conflict throughout the entire book, and only sometimes are his feelings returned. He is also recalling his disturbing childhood- a mother that beat and yelled at him for being slow, a sister who constantly got him into trouble, and a father who tried to help Charly, but couldn’t. Throughout the entire story you see a person getting a second chance at life, getting to see things through new eyes. There is always something different and new happening to Charly and it’s hard to put the book down. My favorite character was mainly Charly, but at times, he was my least favorite character. For the most part you couldn’t help but relate to him, for he is the one telling the story. Sometimes, though, he forgot he was a genius and was rude to and looked down upon others.
