Mehtabel is portrayed as a fearful woman who is dependant, which is apparent when she needs to ask for the materials to sew her new quilt, which, even though a “little thing” excites her beyond words. As the sewing of Mehtabel's quilt progresses in the story, she became more recognized in the family, which in turn made her feel lovely; even this small amount of attention excited her. It does not take much to make aunt Mehtabel feel important. A trip for Mrs. Taylor by Hugh Garner uses a character by the same of “Mrs. Taylor” to represent the elderly. Mrs. Taylor is an humble, fearful old lady, for example she tiptoes around for house so as not to wake her landlady who lives below. Small things excite Mrs. Taylor like going on a trip to visit her son. The idea of traveling to see her son is quite enjoyable to her. She is easily able to travel by herself as she lives close to public transportation. When Mrs. Taylor remembers life with her sons, we can see the genuine need to belong she possesses and how she used to relish belonging as when her children needed her...
