We also have a freedom to dress as we want, but they could not. A form of punishment for women that gossip was called the brank. The brank is a mask that went over and covered the entire head. Then it was chained to a post in the middle of town. The woman’s mouth was covered and her family would have to feed her or the jailer would just slop the food and she would have to get as much as she could. Their clothing was very thick and heavy. They wore about four to five layers of clothing. Hester Prynn wore some lace and she was looked down upon.
