Marie de France’s Lai “Bisclavret”

... that Bisclavret was a werewolf her love for him quickly came to an end, and without hesitation she planned his destruction. The wife then accepted the courtly love that the knight had been begging from her for a long time. The relationship between the wife and the knight consist of lust. She could not have loved him .She deeply loved Bisclavret but his disturbing identity frightens her. When the king goes hunting and comes across Bisclavret as a werewolf, he feels compassion for him when he is begging for mercy. The king realizes that the werewolf has a mind and a heart of a human. We come to see the feudal relationship between vassal and king; Bisclavret still has loyalty and respect towards his king. We also come to see the kindness of the king because even though Bisclavret was a werewolf the king still loved him and took him home to protect him. On the other hand when the wife found out that he was a werewolf she betrayed him so he would never come back to her, for who would want to be married to a werewolf. As the story continues Bisclavret seems kind hearted and humanlike rather than providing a beast portrayal, “[e]veryone was found of him; he was so noble and well behaved that he never wished to do anything wrong”(1338). The audience is beginning to change their attitude toward Bisclavret as being the uncivilized one and seeing his wife as a monster. How could his wife want to hurt such a kind soul? At the scene where Bisclavret attacks the knight everyone is in a state of shock, for it is not like him to act in such a horrendous way. After the wife hears about the incident she comes to talk to the king, but to every ones surprise he attacks her as well. Bisclavret tears her nose off; he turns her beautiful face to a complete disaster. At this point everyone is aware that the werewolf has a grudge against the knight and his wife.
